If a new medicine were developed… January 8, 2018

  1. If a new medicine were developed that would cure arthritis but cause a fatal reaction in 1 percent of those who took it, would you want it be released to the public?

I am happy the question didn’t ask if I would prescribe the drug (and since it did not, I won’t answer the hypothetical).  I would want such a drug to be released to the public with the description that death could occur.  No one is forcing people with arthritis to take the drug, if they want to take it, they should be able to take it.  I don’t see how them taking it would cause harm to anyone other than themselves.  Now, if a doctor were to prescribe the drug…wait, I said I would not answer the hypothetical.  I’d hope if a doctor did prescribe the drug, he or she would mention a possible fatal side effect of taking it.  It would be irresponsible, and likely negligent, otherwise.
